Morocco: From the Atlantic to the Sahara

Tour Itinerary

Day 1

Depart Ottawa

Today you will meet your Travac Tours Director at the Carlingwood Mall and will be transferred from Ottawa to Montreal by private motorcoach.  You will fly directly from Montreal to Marrakesh.  Our office staff will be happy to provide you with flight details.

Day 2

Arrival in Morocco; Casablanca to Rabat

Upon arrival in Marrakesh, we will be met by our private motorcoach for our transfer to Rabat.  Along the way, we will visit Casablanca for lunch (on own) with a stop at the Hassan II Mosque (exterior only), the largest functioning mosque in Africa and the 7th largest in the world.

We will then continue to Rabat, where we will check into our hotel.  The remainder of your afternoon is free to acquaint yourself with the neighbourhood and relax.  Your Travac Tours Director will offer an optional orientation walk of the area.

Day 3

Rabat

Today begins with a tour of Morocco’s elegant capital city, Rabat.  Founded as an Almohad fortress in the 12th century, Rabat eventually grew from a strategic military outpost into Morocco’s modern capital.  Today Rabat is known for its stunning historical and cultural landmarks, broad tree-lined boulevards, and relaxing coastal way of life.

Our tour will take us to the many remarkable monuments that make Rabat so unique: the striking 12^th century Tower of Hassan and its neighbouring old mosque ruins, the Royal family’s Mausoleum of Mohammed V, the Royal Palace (exterior), and the beautiful Kasbah of Oudayas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you will have a chance to explore its seaside fortress and narrow blue and white streets filled with picturesque cafés and traditional homes overlooking the Atlantic.  We will have free time in the Kasbah before returning to the hotel.

Day 4

Rabat

This morning we will visit Chellah, a fascinating archeological site combining both ancient Roman and medieval Islamic architecture.  Originally a Roman settlement known as Sala Colonia, the site was transformed centuries later by the Marinid dynasty who turned the abandoned ruins into a royal necropolis, building mosques, tombs, and ornate gates within the ancient walls.

After our tour of Chellah, we will return to the city centre for lunch (on own).  Your afternoon will be free to enjoy Rabat at your leisure.  You may wish to visit one of the city’s many incredible museums, stroll through its botanical gardens, explore the waterfront, or return to the Kasbah for a relaxing visit.  Your Travac Tours Director will have ample suggestions on how to make the most of your free afternoon and will offer an optional outing.

Day 5

Tangier

This morning we will check out of our hotel and make our way north to the cosmopolitan city of Tangier, perched at the crossroads of Africa and Europe.  Situated just across the Strait of Gibraltar from Spain, Tangier has served as a gateway for international trade for centuries. Tangier’s unique spirit has been shaped by this significant history of trading, diplomacy, and cultural exchange.  Long associated with literary and artistic figures such as Paul Bowles, Henri Matisse, and Tennessee Williams, the city’s colourful charm lies in its distinctive blend of influences.

We will begin our tour of Tangier with a visit to the famed Hercules Caves and Cape Spartel, the geographic point where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean.  We will continue into town to visit Tangier’s diverse tapestry of neighbourhoods: the famed Spanish Quarter with its Art Deco architecture, Place de France at the heart of the Ville Nouvel district and the grand Boulevard de Pasteur, and the Tangier Promenade (also known as the Corniche), a beautiful waterfront esplanade that stretches along the shores of Tangier Bay.  We will also visit Tangier’s ancient Medina in the heart of the city and neighbouring Kasbah, as well as the historic Kasbah Palace (also known as Dar al-Makhzen), a one-time home for Moroccan sultans when they visited the city.

After our tour, we will check in to our hotel for a relaxing evening.

Day 6

Free day in Tangier or optional tour to Chefchaouen

Today is a free day in Tangier to spend at your leisure.  An optional tour ($) to the blue city of Chefchaouen will be offered.

Famous for its picturesque blue-washed buildings, the beautiful city of Chefchaouen is nestled in the Rif Mountains.  Founded in 1471 by Moorish exiles from Spain and local Amazigh communities, Chefchaouen began as a fortified settlement designed to protect the region from Portuguese incursions. Over time, it became a refuge for Muslims and Jewish fleeing the Spanish Reconquista, and its architecture and traditions reflect this rich Andalusian heritage.

Our walking tour will take us through Chefchaouen’s iconic blue-painted streets to Uta El Hamman Square in the heart of the city. Surrounded by blue-washed alleyways, cafés, shops, and some of Chefchaouen’s most important monuments, Uta El Hamman Square is the historic central gathering place of the city’s medina.  We will wander through the medina and visit Ras El Maa, a refreshing mountain spring that has sustained the city for centuries.  You will also have free time to explore the city at your leisure where you may wish to visit a local bakery, shop for handmade traditional crafts, or simply take in all the pleasures of Chefchaouen’s stunning scenery.

Day 7

Volubilis, Meknes, Fes

This morning we will check out of our hotel.  As we depart Tangier, we will make our way through fertile farmland, olive groves, and traditional villages distinctive to the Rif countryside.

We will stop at Morocco’s best-preserved Roman archaeological site and UNESCO World Heritage Centre, Volubilis. Among Volubilis’ highlights are its beautifully preserved mosaics, many of which remain in their original locations. These intricate artworks depict scenes from Roman mythology, daily life, and nature, offering an extraordinary connection to the ancient world.

After touring Volubilis, we will make our way to the imperial city of Meknes.  Meknes reached its golden age in the early 18th century under Sultan Moulay Ismail, who made it the capital of his empire. Determined to create a city that rivalled the great capitals of the world, he commissioned monumental gates, palaces, gardens, mosques, and fortifications throughout the city.  We will visit the magnificent Bab Mansour, widely regarded as one of the most ornate gateways in the country, as well as Plaza El-Hedim, the city’s lively gathering place. We will also make a stop at Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, one of the most important historical and religious monuments in Morocco.  Renowned for its exquisite craftsmanship, you will have a chance to see exquisite examples of traditional Moroccan zellij tilework on prominent display throughout the building and its courtyards.

After our visit to Meknes, we will continue to nearby Fes where we will check in to our hotel.  (B, D)

Day 8

Fes

Today we will embark on a city tour of Fes, one of the world’s best-preserved medieval cities.  Considered the cultural, intellectual, and spiritual heart of the country, Fes was founded in the 9^th century and offers visitors an authentic journey into some of Morocco’s oldest traditions.

We will begin our day with a tour through Mellah of Fes, the oldest Jewish quarter in Morocco. Unlike the inward-facing homes of Fes’ medina, many homes in the Jewish quarter feature wooden balconies overlooking the street, reflecting architectural influences brought by Jewish families who arrived from Spain after the Reconquista.  We will also visit nearby historic Christian and Islamic neighbourhoods, offering a glimpse into Fes’ multicultural past.

We will then make our way through the winding streets, lively souks, textile workshops, and hidden courtyards of the city’s centre, Fes el-Bali, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  While in Fes el-Bali, we will make a visit to the colourful Chouara Tanneries, where leather is still processed using traditional methods, and stop at the magnificent Bab Bou Jeloud, the city’s iconic Blue Gate, which serves as a grand entrance to the medina.  Within the medina we will visit the Nejjarine Fountain, admired for its exquisite decoration and symbolic significance to the area’s artisan quarters, the entrance to Medersa Bouaninia, a stunning example of historic Marinid architecture, and pass by the University of al-Qarawiyyin, founded in 859 AD and recognized as the world’s oldest continually operating university.

No visit to Fes is complete without a stop at its Royal Palace (from the exterior) to see this masterpiece of Moroccan-Islamic architecture.  Its magnificent seven gilded bronze doors facing Place des Alaouites are especially renowned for their spectacular craftsmanship and detail.

Day 9

Ifrane, Midelt, Erfoud

This morning we will check out of our hotel and begin our journey towards the Sahara Desert.  Our first stop takes us through the Middle Atlas Mountains to the small town of Ifrane, also affectionately known as “Little Switzerland”.  Ifrane comes by this moniker honestly: known for its cooler temperatures, manicured gardens, alpine and chalet-style architecture, and surrounding cedar forests, this region offers a striking contrast to Morocco’s imperial and desert cities.  We will have a tour of this lovely town before continuing our journey through the mountains.

Our next stop will be in the village of Midelt, located between the Middle Atlas and High Atlas ranges- a significant geographic transition point connecting the mountains to the desert landscapes of the south.  Originally a market town serving local Amazigh communities, today Midelt is best known for its apple production.  Surrounded by mountains, valleys, orchards, and agricultural land, Midelt’s gorgeous scenery attracts nature enthusiasts from the world over.  We will enjoy lunch (on own) and free time in Midelt before continuing on to the Gateway of the Sahara, Erfound.

Erfoud is a town in the southeastern part of Morocco, situated on the edge of the vast Sahara Desert.  Founded by the French in the early 20th century as a military outpost, Erfoud has since grown into a regional centre surrounded by palm groves and beautiful desert scenery. The town lies within the fertile Tafilalt Oasis, one of Morocco’s largest oasis regions and the historic birthplace of the Alaouite dynasty, which continues to rule Morocco today.

Upon arrival in Erfoud, we will check in to our hotel for a relaxing evening. (B, D)

Day 10

Merzouga and the Sahara Desert

Today we will embark on an unforgettable journey into the Sahara Desert!

This morning we will be picked up at our hotel by 4x4s to take us into the desert.  We will explore the iconic Merzouga Sand Dunes, where we will have ample opportunity to take in its vast and breathtaking scenery of golds, oranges, and reds.  Should you wish, you can also take part in an optional camel ride ($).

Long before the Sahara Desert emerged, the Merzouga and Erfoud regions were covered by a large prehistoric sea. Over millions of years, the remains of marine creatures were preserved within the earth, creating one of the world’s richest and most fascinating fossil landscapes. After time in the dunes, our day will continue with a visit to a fossil extraction site.

We will then visit Rissani, an historic oasis town where the ancient kingdom of Sijilmasa once stood.  For centuries, caravans laden with gold, salt, ivory, and spices crossed the Sahara and passed through this region, making it one of the most important commercial centres in North Africa. Today one of Rissani’s greatest attractions is its traditional souk, considered among the most authentic in Morocco. Market days bring together residents from surrounding villages and desert communities to trade livestock, dates, spices, textiles, and handicrafts.

Finally, we will visit the nomadic village of Khamlia, renowned throughout Morocco for its rich musical heritage.  Reflecting centuries of tradeand cultural exchange across the Sahara, Gwana music is Khamlia’s spiritual and rhythmic musical tradition recognized by UNESCO as part of its Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Performances feature the distinctive sounds of the guembri- a three-stringed bass lute, metal castanets called qraqeb, singing, and rhythmic chanting. We will attend a vibrant Gwana musical performance before returning to the hotel.  The remainder of your afternoon will be free to enjoy the beautiful desert surroundings or hotel amenities. Lunch is included today.

Day 11

Tinghir, Todra Gorge, Boumaline Dades

This morning we will check out of our hotel to begin our drive along the scenic Route of a Thousand Kasbahs, traversing the southern slopes of the High Atlas Mountains and linking a series of oases, fortified villages, and canyons. Historically, this region lay along important caravan routes connecting the Sahara with Morocco’s imperial cities, and many of the kasbahs you will see throughout the drive were originally built to protect trade and agricultural settlements.

Our first stop of the day will be in the picturesque oasis town of Tinghir. Tinghir is a village of incredible contrasts: the lush greenery of its extensive palm and olive groves juxtaposed against the dramatic reds of its architecture and surrounding mountains make for a striking landscape to behold.  Tinghir is a perfect example of how communities have adapted to life in Morocco’s desert regions.

After touring Tinghir, we will continue our journey to one of Morocco’s most spectacular natural wonders, the Todra Gorge.  Although its surrounding region is largely arid, the gorge was carved over thousands of years by water from the Todra River as it cut through layers of limestone and rock. In certain parts of the gorge, towering cliffs rise up to 300 metres (nearly 1,000 feet) above the canyon floor.  We will have a panoramic tour of the gorge with photo stops.

Our final stop of the day will be the city of Boumaline Dades, nestled in the heart of the Dades Valley.  Known for its geological landscapes and unusual rock formations, this city is also part of Morocco’s Valley of Roses, a fertile area especially known for their cultivation of Damask roses and rosewater products.

Day 12

Ouarzazate, Ait Ben Haddou, Marrakesh

Today we will check out of our hotel to continue our journey along the Route of a Thousand Kasbahs towards Marrakesh.  Our first stop of the day will be in the desert city of Ouarzazate.  The city is distinctive for its multiple kasbah fortresses that were once home to influential Moroccan families.  Today it is perhaps best known as the “Hollywood of Morocco” due to its thriving international film industry.  Situated at a crossroads between the mountains, desert, valleys, and ancient villages of the region, Ouarzazate has provided its backdrop to countless cinematic productions such as Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, The Mummy, and Game of Thrones.

After visiting Ouarzazate, we will continue to the extraordinary ksar (fortified village) and UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Ben Haddou.  Considered a masterpiece of traditional Moroccan earthen architecture, Ait Ben Haddou tells the story of Morocco’s connection between desert and urban life. For centuries, caravans passed through Ait Ben Haddou’s surrounding valleys carrying treasures across the Sahara, while this remarkable village stood as both a home and a guardian of the route.  We will tour this striking ksar with plenty of opportunities to soak in the magic of its surroundings.

Our last leg of the journey along the Route of a Thousand Kasbahs will take us to the legendary city of Marrakesh, our home for the next 4 nights.  After checking into the hotel, your Travac Tours Director will offer an optional orientation walk of the neighbourhood.

Day 13

Marrakesh

After breakfast at the hotel, we will join our local guide for a peaceful morning escape to Anima– a botanical garden, open-air art gallery, and immersive sensory experience all in one.  Spread across several beautifully landscaped hectares, Anima is home to an exceptional variety of plant life.  Moving through the garden’s lush pathways, you will discover inspiring sculptures and art installations connected to celebrated artists such as Auguste Rodin, Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, and Keith Haring, all thoughtfully woven into the landscape.

After our visit to Anima, your afternoon will be free.  You may wish to have lunch at one of the city’s renowned restaurants, visit one of its museums, take a leisurely walk, or spend the afternoon enjoying the hotel’s pool or spa facilities.  Your Travac Tours Director will have ample suggestions on how to make the most of your free time.

After dinner tonight, an optional evening horse-drawn carriage ride through Marrakesh’s luminous night market will be offered ($).

Day 14

Marrakesh

Today we will embark on a full day city tour of colourful Marrakesh to discover the very best of the city.  We will begin our day with a visit to the Menera Gardens– a public orchard first established in the 12^th century, best known today for its iconic reflecting pool.  We will then tour one of Marrakesh’s most beloved attractions, the Jardin Majorelle.  A peaceful oasis of exotic plants and striking cobalt-blue architecture, this space was created in the 1920s by French painter Jacques Majorelle, who spent nearly 40 years transforming the property into a living work of art.  After Majorelle’s death, the site was bought and restored in by renowned fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent.

We will then walk through the Jewish Quarter, also known as the Mellah of Marrakesh. Established in 1558 during the Saadian dynasty, it became home to a thriving Jewish community that played an important role in the commercial, cultural, and diplomatic life of the city.  We will visit the exterior of the Koutoubia Mosque to see its magnificent 77-metre minaret, which dominates Marrakesh’s skyline.

We will then venture into Jemall el Fnaa, the vibrant heart of Marrakesh and one of the world’s most famous public squares. For nearly a thousand years, Jemall el Fnaa has served as a gathering place where merchants, entertainers, storytellers, and musicians meet.  We will tour its colourful souks and markets, where spice vendors, local artisans, and textile makers sell their wares.  After our tour, you will have free time to shop and explore, should you wish.

Day 15

Marrakesh

Today is a free day to spend at your leisure enjoying the wonders of Marrakesh.

In the morning, an optional Moroccan cooking class will be offered at a local culinary organization ($).  You will learn to prepare traditional Moroccan dishes and enjoy your creations over lunch.

Day 16

Return to Canada

Alas, this morning it will be time to say goodbye to colourful and vibrant Morocco.  We will check out of our hotel and be transferred to the Marrakesh airport for our flight to Montreal.  Upon arrival in Montreal, we will be transferred by private motorcoach back to Ottawa (Carlingwood Mall).  Our office will be happy to provide you with flight details.
