Stonehenge • Torquay • Greenway • Bath • The Cotswolds • London

On September 28th, Travac wants you to join us on a very special tour as we delve into the life and times of the world’s most prolific crime novelist, Agatha Christie.  Christie has sold over 2 billion copies of her books, making her by far the greatest selling novelist in history next to Shakespeare, and continues to enchant audiences beyond the page through ongoing stage and screen adaptations of her most memorable works.

We’ll begin our journey to England with a visit to Stonehenge before arriving in Christie’s hometown of Torquay, where she created many of her most memorable characters including Inspector Poirot and Miss Marple.  After exploring the beautiful seascapes, rolling farmlands and rugged moors of this county we’ll make our way to Greenway, the once holiday home of Agatha Christie and her family.  To get there, we will embark on a heritage steam train along the spectacular English Riviera Geopark coast line, then cross the River Dart by riverboat ferry to arrive at the estate.

We’ll then continue on to Bath, where many of the modern Christie series are filmed. A famed UNESCO World Heritage Centre founded by the Romans in the 1st century AD who used the area’s natural hot springs as a thermal spa, Bath boasts unforgettable Roman, Georgian, and Palladian revival style architecture that blend harmoniously with its Roman baths.  From Bath we will visit the Cotswolds, one of England’s most picturesque regions home to quintessential golden-stone villages, idyllic rolling hills, historic market towns, and lovely gardens.

We’ll conclude our adventure with a visit to London and Baker Street to walk in the footsteps of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, and learn about the relationship between Conan Doyle and Christie.  You will also have plenty of free time to spend in London at your leisure.

Attractively priced at only $4469 per person + taxes of $1050 based on double occupancy, this fabulous journey includes return airfare from Ottawa; accommodation at centrally located hotels in Torquay, Bath, and London; transportation by private deluxe motor coach throughout the tour; guided tours of Stonehenge, Torquay, Greenway, Bath, the Cotswolds, and Sherlock Holmes’ London; British afternoon tea service in Torquay; steam train and ferry boat rides to and from Greenway; all entrance fees while on tour; and the services of a Travac Tours Director.  Space is limited on this unforgettable adventure- call our office at 613-728-1934 for more information or to book your spot!

Arrival in the UK, Stonehenge, and Torquay

Upon arrival in the UK, we will begin our day by travelling to Stonehenge.  Located in Wiltshire, Stonehenge’s iconic prehistoric megalithic structures are one of the great wonders of the world and the best-known prehistoric monument in the West.  We will follow in the footsteps of our Neolithic ancestors who lived here 4000 years ago as we learn about this powerful testament to human ingenuity, imagination and creativity.

We will then make our way to the seaside resort town of Torquay, often referred to as the English Riviera, where we will check into our hotel.  Once checked-in, your tour director will offer an optional orientation walk of the area.  The remainder of your day is free to get acquainted with this beautiful harbour town.

Day 3

Torquay

We will begin our day with a walking tour of Torquay, where you will be introduced to Agatha Christie’s hometown.  The beautiful seascapes, rolling farmlands and rugged moors of this county provided endless inspiration to Christie, who featured Torquay in some of her best-known mysteries.  Your local guide will introduce you to many of the sites Christie wove into her novels while describing how the characters of Inspector Poirot and Miss Marple were developed.  We will then break for an afternoon high tea with finger sandwiches, scones, and cakes.

This afternoon, you will have the option to visit the Kents Cavern Prehistoric Caves.  Part of the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark, this extensive labyrinth of spectacular and easily accessible caverns are over 2 million years old and were once home to prehistoric Ice Age animals and Britain’s earliest humans.

Day 4

Greenway

Our morning begins with a journey to Greenway, the one-time holiday home of Agatha Christie and her family.  To get there, we will first embark on a heritage steam train along the spectacular English Riviera Geopark coast line.  We will then cross the River Dart by riverboat ferry to arrive at the estate.

Situated in a large romantic woodland garden, Greenway is a Georgian house originally built in the late 18th century.  Its walled gardens are home to a restored peach house and vinery, as well as an allotment cared for by local school children. A visit to Greenway isn’t complete without seeing the boathouse, scene of the crime in ‘Dead Man’s Folly’, as well as the estate’s battery.

Upon returning to Torquay in the late afternoon, the remainder of your day is free to spend at leisure.

Day 5

Bath

After a hearty breakfast at the hotel, we will depart Torquay for the famed city and UNESCO World Heritage Centre of Bath.  Founded by the Romans in the 1st century AD who used the area’s natural hot springs as a thermal spa, Bath became an important centre of the wool industry in the Middle Ages.  In the 18th century, under George III, it developed into an elegant town with neoclassical Palladian buildings, which blend harmoniously with its Roman baths.  Bath is also the primary setting for Netflix’s Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials, a new miniseries based on Christie’s acclaimed 1927 novel.

Upon arrival, we will embark on a tour of the city, visiting The Royal Crescent, The Circus Historic Site, Pulteney Bridge, Bath Abbey, and of course, the Roman Baths.  After our tour, we will check in to our hotel.  The remainder of the day is free to enjoy this beautiful city.
