Tour Itinerary

Day 1

Today you will depart Ottawa Airport for your flights to Deer Lake. Upon your arrival you will be transferred to your hotel in Gros Morne National Park. This world heritage site takes its name from Newfoundland’s second highest mountain peak

Overnight in Cow Head (Shallow Bay Motel or similar) or Rocky Harbour (Mountain Range Cottages or similar)

Day 2

Gros Morne Park is famous for its spectacular scenery. Apart from enjoying this incredible landscape by land, you will also venture off on a boat tour within the park on Bonne Bay. This will allow you an entirely different perspective on the millennia old striking landscapes. It will also give you the opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of the region.

Overnight in Cow Head (Shallow Bay Motel or similar) or Rocky Harbour (Mountain Range Cottages or similar)

Day 3

Moving north we will visit the Port au Choix National Historic Site. Here you’ll find the crossroads of 6000 years of human history. The sea’s bounty drew Maritime Archaic Indian, Dorset and Groswater Paleoeskimo, and Recent Indian’s here long before Europeans arrived. Seals on passing iceflows were hunted by the Dorset and used for food, shelter and clothing.

Overnight in St. Anthony’s – Hotel North or Grenfell Suites (or similar)

Day 4

This morning you will make your way to the UNESCO National Historic Site, L’Anse aux Meadows. It was here in 1960 that a group of archeologists discovered the remains of what was an ancient Norse encampment that would have housed as many as 100 Vikings. While here, you will have a chance to view some of the recovered artifacts. Your guide will also go over how the encampment was discovered. Near the original encampment are several re-created sod and timber buildings depicting how life was lived 1,000 years ago.

In the afternoon, we will take a guided tour of Sir Wilfred Grenfell Mission. The Grenfell Mission provided some of the earliest permanent medical services in Labrador and northern Newfoundland. Before the mission opened its first hospital at Battle Harbour in 1893, almost no health-care resources existed in the area.

Overnight in St. Anthony’s – Hotel North or Grenfell Suites (or similar)

Day 5

This morning we will leave the northern peninsula. There will still be many opportunities to enjoy its natural beauty and you driver will make stops along our route in order to allow time for picture taking.

Overnight in Cow Head (Shallow Bay Motel or similar) or Rocky Harbour (Mountain Range Cottages or similar)

Day 6

After breakfast, we will make our way to Gander. Gander is most famous for the role that it has played in Canadian aviation history. This role extends back the 1930’s and was most prominent in World War II when over 10,000 airmen were stationed in Gander. Most of the streets in Gander are named after famous aviators, such as Amelia Earhart, Alcock and Brown, Charles Lindbergh, Eddie Rickenbacker, Marc Garneau and Chuck Yeager.

Overnight in Gander – Sinbad’s Hotel (or similar)

Day 7

Today you will make your way to visit Twillingate, one of the most picturesque outports in all of Newfoundland. Located on the northeastern shore of Newfoundland, Twillingate is affectionately known as the ‘Iceberg Capital of the World’. Twillingate was once an active fishing community and is one of the oldest ports on the island.

Overnight in Clarenville – Clarenville Inn (or similar)

Day 8

Your journey today will take you to Bonavista and Trinity. In Bonavista you will have the chance to view the cliffs and enjoy the wonderful coastal scenery. It was here that John Cabot made landfall in 1497. This is also a major center for the fishing industry in Newfoundland. From Bonavista you will continue on to Trinity. Trinity is one of the oldest communities in North America and is a gem of a village.

Overnight in Clarenville – Clarenville Inn (or similar)

Day 9

Today will take you into St. John’s, the capital of Newfoundland. A stop at Cape Spear with a tour will be made onroute.

After time for lunch (on your own) in St. John’s, we will embark on a 3 hour city tour. The city enjoys a long and vibrant history as the oldest English-founded city in North America. While the city owes a great deal to the fishing industry, it has been transformed into a modern city famed for its nightlife and its rich musical culture. Evening is free.

Overnight St. John’s – Hilton Garden Inn (or similar)

Day 10

This morning you will travel down the Avalon Peninsula to the town of Bay Bulls. From here you will make your way to Witless Bay where you will embark on a boat tour and have a chance to view thousands of Atlantic Puffins, Murres and other seabirds that make their home here in the summer.

Tonight there will be a farewell dinner.

Known as “Inverbreakie” until the early 18th century, Invergordon has long been recognized for its rich naval history and jewel of a harbor in the northern Highlands. Invergordon perches on the northern bank of the Cromarty Firth, a lengthy estuary that provides welcome sanctuary for a multitude of water birds and one of only two species of resident bottlenose dolphin in the British Isles. Venture into the Highlands, where the local clan castles perch on craggy hills and on the shores of lochs and firths. And there’s always the chance to see the mysterious Loch Ness Monster.

Day 6

Cruise Day 6

Stornoway (Hebrides), United Kingdom

(8am – 4pm)

The unspoiled Outer Hebrides is a world of its own, separated from mainland Scotland by more than water. The language is Gaelic, the attitude heavily self-sufficient and the wildlife uncommon. The capital of the Outer Hebrides, Stornoway is tucked into a beautiful natural harbor on Lewis Island, which the Vikings repeatedly invaded. While renowned as a center for Harris Tweed, Stornoway is also home to the Neo-Gothic Lews Castle, the An Lanntair arts center and a multitude of northern birds such as the Arctic skua, golden eagle and corncrake.

Day 7

Cruise Day 7

Glasgow (Greenock), United Kingdom

(10am – 8pm)

Offering some of the finest Victorian architecture in the UK, Glasgow is a major center of commerce and culture. Glasgow Cathedral is one of the only cathedrals in Scotland to have survived the Reformation in tact and houses a celebrated collection of stained glass windows. The Burrell Collection showcases a range of work by major artists such as Rodin, Degas and Cézanne, as well as examples of late medieval, Chinese and Islamic art. When exploring Scotland’s culinary culture, be sure to taste some of the famed single malt whiskies.

Day 8

Cruise Day 8

Dublin (Dún Laoghaire), Ireland

(8am – 8pm)

Considering it’s the birthplace of some of the world’s greatest literary figures – Beckett, Joyce, Shaw, Wilde, Yeats – you can’t help but wonder what it is about Dublin that so inspires. Exploring the city, you find answers. It’s the strong sense of community embodied in its pub culture, in the stunning churches seemingly on every corner, and in the sprawling parks where residents gather to commune with nature. It’s also the history preserved in the ancient books of Trinity College’s Old Library and in the story of Guinness and his iconic beer. Meanwhile, the charming seaside town of Dún Laoghaire possesses its own sense of timeless appeal, from the James Joyce Tower and Museum to the National Maritime Museum of Ireland.

Day 9

Cruise Day 9

Belfast, Ireland

(7am – 6pm)

Delight in this vibrant city of ornate Victorian and Edwardian architecture, gracious gardens and friendly pubs. Thrill to the natural phenomenon of the Giants’ Causeway, a stunning geological anomaly of tightly packed, uneven basalt columns disappearing into the sea, and the enigmatic ruins of Grey Abbey.

Day 10

Cruise Day 10

Waterford, Ireland

(8am – 6pm)

Stroll through this 1,100-year-old Viking town and admire Rodney’s Tower, still in use, and see the exquisite treasures in the museum. Visit the Waterford Crystal Visitors’ Centre, where you can see how the artisans cut their famous designs. Or enjoy the beautiful Irish countryside as you pass majestic abbey ruins, stroll through quaint villages and see remnants of Viking heritage.

Day 11

Cruise Day 11

Fowey, United Kingdom

(8am – 5pm)

With a rich seafaring history dating back to the 14th Century, Fowey (pronounced Foy) in Cornwall is still one of England’s busiest ports. The circular Hall Walk is quite popular and follows the banks of the estuary. In town stroll the Esplanade, visit St. Fimbarrus Church, and admire the view from St. Catherine’s Castle, which was built during the reign of Henry VIII to protect the harbor. Blockhouses from the late 1300s stand on either side of the harbor, from which a chain was once hung to prevent undesirable ships from entering.

Malta is a very diverse country where their history is still evident today and dates back as far as the Neolithic period. Many temples are scattered around the island and “Ggantija” is said to be one of the oldest surviving, free-standing monuments in the world, predating Stonehenge by around 1,000 years! With their strategic position in the Med, the Maltese islands have played a crucial role historically and have set the scenes for the wars between Rome and Carthage, the Second World War, the Cold War, and the period of the Crusades which left the biggest impression. When the Knights Hospitaller of St John were driven out of Rhodes and handed Malta by Charles V, they bequeathed palaces, forts, cathedrals, an abundance of art and, of course, the Maltese Cross. Malta is also a very exciting destination where you can enjoy boat rentals and plenty of beach activities. For the movie buffs, “The Da Vinci Code” and “Troy” along with many other movies were filmed here. It was also the location for the series “Game of Thrones”.
