Join Travac on an overnight adventure to discover the very best of Lanark County on our spring maple tour!  Lanark County is the Maple Syrup Capital of Ontario, and for good reason: over 400 maple syrup producers of varying sizes call Lanark home.  We’ll learn about notable historic influences in the region, visit an authentic vintage sugar shack, tour a maple heritage museum, learn about the region’s once-thriving textile industry and the workers who helped shape it at the North Lanark Regional Museum, and most importantly sample a wide array of delightful local gastronomic fare including a variety of sensational maple products, local cheeses, chocolates, as well as spirits at Top Shelf Distillers and the Vodkow Dairy Distillery.  We will also visit Sam Bat, where baseball bats made of maplewood are created, enjoy a walking visit of Perth, visit Almonte’s charming town centre, and much more! Tour Itinerary


Day 1

Ottawa to Perth

This morning, we will depart Carlingwood Shopping Centre for our journey to Lanark County. Our first stop will be in the village of McDonalds Corners, a historic settlement named after early Scottish immigrants often referred to as “The Hill”. Here we visit the Wheelers Pancake House, Sugar Camp and Museums. Named one of the Top 10 maple experiences in Canada by Canadian Geographic, Wheelers Sugar Camp is one of the largest maple producers in Ontario with over 40,000 trees tapped.  It is also home to a sugar shack, beautiful nature trails, a maple heritage museum, a forest and farm museum, and outdoor displays that you will have time to explore and enjoy.  Next, we will head to the Lanark Village Treats famous for its high-quality, handmade chocolates, particularly the popular “Northern Nugget,” a milk chocolate bar with caramel and local maple syrup. The chocolates are handcrafted on-site, using traditional recipes. We will then continue to Balderson Village Cheese Store, a delightful destination for cheese lovers. Renowned for its exceptional aged cheddar, the shop showcases a diverse array of cheeses to sample or buy. We will then make our way to Perth, voted the prettiest town in Ontario. Here we will visit the Crystal Palace & Mammoth Cheese. You will have time for lunch ($) on your own. We will then visit Top Shelf Distillers, known for reviving a centuries-old whisky tradition and for their fabulous moonshine and desert liquors. You will have the opportunity to sample a tasting flight of Rideau, Maple and Sherry Cask whiskies. After an enjoyable day, we will head to The Best Western Perth Parkside Inn overlooking beautiful Stewart Park to check in. Enjoy dinner on your own ($) before relaxing in the peace and quiet of your hotel room. (B)

Day 2

Perth, Carleton Place, Almonte

After breakfast and check out at the hotel, we will begin our day with a walk around Perth. We first explore Stewart Park, learning about Big Ben’s and Ian Miller’s remarkable achievements and important connection to the town. We will then head to CDL Maple Sugaring Equipment for a brief presentation about equipment used to make maple products before travelling to Carleton Place to visit Sam Bat, the Original Maple Bat Corporation, makers and originators of professional maple baseball bats sold worldwide.

Next, we embark on a guided tour of the North Lanark Regional Museum, learning about the region’s once-thriving textile industry and the workers who helped shape it, as well as the history of Mississippi Mills. We will also explore a variety of regional cultural artifacts, from the pioneer era until the present day. Next, we will visit the charming town of Almonte in Mississippi Mills. We will visit Almonte’s picturesque downtown core where you will have a chance to explore Mill Street’s unique boutiques and historic architecture as well as view the town’s Hallmark Christmas movie shooting locations. Your Travac Tours Director will take you to various locations in Almonte to taste/purchase maple products including Vodkow Dairy Distillery, where delicious spirits are created from milk sugar, followed by a visit to Healthy Food Technology, famous for its handmade doughnuts. You will also have the opportunity to visit award-winning Hummingbird Chocolates who have a variety of maple offerings before stopping at Equator Coffee Roaster, a pioneering Canadian fair trade coffee company whose original flagship cafe is located in Almonte.

After a coffee treat to round off the tour, we will head back to Ottawa. Expect to arrive in the evening. (B)
