Travac’s San Francisco tour goes far beyond San Francisco. Hosted by a knowledgeable local guide, you’ll experience the Bay area’s premier attractions with an insightful 4 hour orientation tour that will provide you with inspiration for your free time on the town. You’ll even take in San Francisco’s infamous prison, Alcatraz. To complete your western odyssey you’ll have a chance to enjoy the charm of the Napa Valley with a visit to one of the region’s local wineries. Then it will be off to the historic and picturesque town of Monterey with a stop in the charming and scenic village of Carmel by the Sea. Your trip culminates with a visit to arguably America’s most beautiful national park — Yosemite.
Your hotel in San Francisco is the well located Hilton San Francisco Union Square (5 nights). This first class hotel is located close to city’s most celebrated shops, attractions and restaurants. While traveling to Monterey and Yosemite you will be staying at the Hampton Inn in Merced, California (2 nights).

Tour Itinerary
Day 1
After checking-in at Ottawa International Airport; you will depart for San Francisco. Flight details to be advised approximately 2-3 weeks prior to departure. Upon arrival, you will greet your local tour host at the airport and transfer to your hotel. The remainder of your afternoon will be free to explore the city at your own leisure. The area around Union Square has many unique shops and restaurants for you to enjoy during your stay.

Day 2
At 8:00am you will depart for a tour of the city, escorted by your knowledgeable local host. You will see the city’s famous neighbourhoods, such as Fisherman’s Wharf, Nob Hill, and Chinatown, and visit many of its spectacular sites, such as the Golden Gate Bridge and Coit Tower. After your tour, you will have a chance to enjoy lunch on your own in the Fisherman’s Wharf district. In the early afternoon you will meet for a guided tour of Alcatraz Island. This famous island penitentiary in San Francisco Bay was opened in 1934 and served as a concentration site for ‘difficult to manage’ prisoners for over thirty years.

Day 3
Having completed your orientation of the city, you will have today free to explore San Francisco at your own leisure. Take this opportunity to acquaint yourself with the city’s many character-filled neighbourhoods such as North Beach, San Francisco’s ‘Little Italy.’ This inspiring neighbourhood is located along Columbus Avenue and was one of the hubs of the 1950s literary ‘Beat’ movement. San Francisco also has the oldest and largest Chinatown, with hundreds of unique and colourful vendors and shops all of which are within walking distance of your hotel.

Day 4
This morning you depart for a day trip to the Napa Valley. Napa and Sonoma counties are only about an hour from downtown San Francisco and are amongst the world’s leading winemaking regions. Your tour will include a Winery Tour (TBA). We will stop in Napa with time for lunch and shopping. In the mid-afternoon you arrive back at your hotel. The remainder of your afternoon will be free to explore more of the iconic sites of the city. Union Square is very close to the Hilton and has a wide variety of restaurants and shops, including Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom and Macy’s.

Day 5
You will have today free to tour San Francisco on your own. Museum-goers might be keen on visiting the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, while shoppers might want to spend the day in Chinatown and Fisherman’s Wharf, exploring the many unique shops that line the streets of those famous neighbourhoods.

Day 6
At 8:00 AM we will leave San Francisco by motor coach and drive along the Pacific coast to Monterey. Monterey is famous as a holiday destination for both celebrities and tourists alike. Its colonial downtown is ideal for strolling and you will have ample time to shop and enjoy your experience in Monterey. We will also be visiting Carmel. The town is known for its natural scenery and rich artistic history. Again you will have time to enjoy the richness of this marvelous town. Most of the shops in this scenic town are one of a kind and well worth the visit. We will be staying in Carmel for an early dinner(on your own) before to heading to Merced for our overnight stop.
Day 7
Our destination today is Yosemite National Park. Yosemite was one of the first wilderness parks in the United States and although it is best known for the grandeur of its waterfalls, you will experience deep flowing valleys, grand meadows, ancient giant sequoias and a vast wilderness area that has been immortalized by photographers such as Ancel Adams. Designated a World Heritage Site in 1984, Yosemite is also internationally recognized for its spectacular granite. Tourists to Yosemite are in constant awe of the natural beauty that these ancient outcropping provide. Indeed, the stunning vistas of Yosemite will be pleasantly etched into your memory. You will return to Merced for your overnight stay. (B)

Day 8
This morning you will leave your hotel and travel to San Francisco International Airport for your return flight to Ottawa. Flight details to be advised approximately 2-3 weeks prior to departure. (B)
