New Orleans and the Songs of the South – November 2019

New Orleans is a multicultural, dynamic city with a special Creole energy that flows through its streets, clubs and restaurants. The city was first settled by the French in 1718 and highly influenced by the Spanish who also occupied it for several years. Today “The French Quarter” with its distinctive architecture and multicoloured buildings is an icon of the south. Bourbon Street and the city’s Mardi Gras are visited by millions of enthusiastic tourists every year. Whether you are walking along its enchanted streets, strolling “The Riverwalk” on the Mississippi River, or riding the St. Charles streetcar through the Garden District, the city’s charm is inescapable.

Many people come to the “Big Easy” for its food – a colourful and tasty mix of Cajun and Creole traditions that can be easily found in many of the city’s fine restaurants and inexpensive sidewalk cafes. Many more come for its Jazz. It is of course the birthplace of Jazz heard throughout the French Quarter and Bourbon Street both day and night. The history and friendly charm of its people add to the universal appeal of this great city.

Travac’s tour to New Orleans includes much more than just New Orleans. You’ll stay at the Drury Inn & Suites Hotel in the heart of the Arts District, convenient to the French Quarter. You will visit one of the stately plantation homes that drove the economy of this state in the 19th century. After lunch you’ll visit Bayou Country and enjoy a pontoon swamp tour. Travac’s adventure to New Orleans is exceptionally well priced and will sell out fast. Join us as we explore the colour and charm of this vibrant city.

Depart Ottawa for your trip to Boston. You will be overnighting just outside Boston before joining your cruise.

Day 2

This morning the magic begins with a guided tour of Boston. Your tour guide, a knowledgeable local, will take us through the city giving you a chance to see some of the fabulous sites that have made this city a cosmopolitan gem. After the tour it will be time to depart for the cruise. Your ship, the Norwegian Gem, sails at 5:00 p.m.

Day 3

Bar Harbour, Maine

This coastal attraction has retained much of its charm since its glory days of the 1900s, when America’s elite vacationed here in opulent summer cottages. Surrounding the rock-bound harbour is the world-famous Acadia National Park where the opulence of nature is on display.

Day 4

Halifax, Nova Scotia

Day 6

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island

Opulent clapboard villas lead the way towards Charlottetown’s beautiful Victoria Park. Colour is everywhere – from the Victorian architecture to the red sandstone cliffs. Sample homemade island jams, visit the Anne of Green Gables homestead and stroll the boardwalk.

This French-speaking region is north of Quebec City and is considered a small oasis in the midst of the nearly uninhabited Canadian wilderness.
